When the vehicle was traveling on the vast land of Inner Mongolia, our story began little by little ......

Ulanky No.5 Village, the destination for our trip, is located in Baotou, Inner Mongolia. It is believed that anyone who first comes to this small village will be attracted by the distance and vastness here. This a primitive landscape with great mountains and rivers, including clear blue sky and fresh air, snowy mountains and boundless land, and flocks of cattle and sheep and abounding small houses.

However, the villagers faces seem always to show a trace of anxiety. It turns out that they live a primitive pastoral life only with the primitive prairie landscape, even without basic domestic water!

In March 2014, our team first came to Ulanky No.5 Village, Inner Mongolia. The local original water supply system composed of water tower and water pump is pressurized by the water pump to pump water from the water well to the tower in the mountain for storage. Only by unscrewing the faucet at home, can the villagers use tap water. But we found in the research that, it was not convenient for the villagers to use water. In order to maintain the normal operation of the system, the villagers used to walk up the mountain to view the water level in the water tower and walk down the mountain to start the water pump to store water every day. It would take one and a half hour for a round trip to walk up and down the mountain. Whenever the mountain was covered with snow in winter, it would be extremely dangerous to walk in the mountain.

We also learned from the villagers that the local temperature was far below the freezing point of water; for this reason, in the winter of 2013, the pump failed to be started in time, thereby resulting in the two frost cracking accidents due to too low water pipe temperature. This forced the villagers to spend a lot of maintenance costs, and even to drink less water for days.

In line with the idea that science and technology make life more convenient, we investigated the automatic level control systems available in the market. Most of them were used for water level monitoring. It was found that the functions offered by the products on the market were too complicated and difficult to operate, and they used too high design standards; moreover, most of the high-tech features such as bursting resistance, corrosion resistance, anti-static, etc went far beyond the needs of the villagers. To solve the problem of water shortage in Ulanky No.5 Village, in fact, just a simple water level control function was required. But the local component vendors distribution channels were so simple that the existing core technology couldnt help to transform the existing system; therefore, the similar demand for the automatic level control system in the village couldnt be satisfied. So, we decided to design a convenient system which would eliminate the use of special communication equipment and the occupation of dedicated communication channel. It would be easy to learn. And it would send various instructions using SMS (Short Message Service). With it, the herders would get convenient, safe and economic level monitoring solutions, thereby feeling the happiness brought by technology in addition to enjoying the primitive ecological scenery!

So the Enactus Team of Dalian Jiaotong University took positive action.

In May 2014, based on the fieldwork in Ulanky No.5 Village, we had access to a great deal of professional information on audience demand; and after two months, we successfully developed a complete set of wireless level control system with the teacher's guidance. The water level detection float sensor and pump controller contained in our "Wireless Level Control System" could view the water level instead of the villagers, in order to free themselves from the arduous uphill journey. The pump controller could automatically start and stop the pump instead of the villagers. The communication data link in the system connected the villagers, the water level sensor and the pump controller. Only by using SMS, could the villagers get accurate feedback, and achieve remote control. This solved at a stroke the water control problems that the villagers had suffered from for a long time. In the case of maintenance in place, this system could sustainably operate for more than a decade.

In July of the same year, we went back to Ulanky No.5 Village with the developed product to visit the local people and explain the advantages of our "Wireless Level Control System". Upon the consent of the local villagers, the Village Committee implemented installation and commissioning. However, we found that the wiring cost would be extremely high. In order to save the system cost, we took entrepreneurial action, namely improving existing system and using the wireless power of solar panels to achieve innovation, so that the system could become more stable, reliable, safe and environmentally friendly.

In October, we completed the installation and commissioning of the improved system, and arranged R & D staff to train local electricians and villagers, in order to teach them simple maintenance technology. In this way, despite living in Dalian, we would not have to worry about the audiences lack of technical support. Both our team and local villagers were confident in this new system. We hoped this system could really achieve the purpose of facilitating the audiences life.                    

In February 2015, we completed the follow-up comprehension of the "Wireless Level Control System" in Ulanky No.5 Village. We found that the system was in good condition, and the villagers finally could use water easily. Also, our system reflected its true value.

Through the objective and pragmatic assessment of direct and indirect results, we not only achieved the minor improvement in the water supply system, but also helped the villagers improve their livelihoods in an economic, social and sustainable way. It could be seen from the statistics provided by the Village Committee that the direct beneficiaries of the water tower system were the 231 households and 661 villagers in Ulanky No.5 Village.

In terms of technological innovation, we used float sensor for the real-time detection of changes in water level through the redesign and improvement of traditional manual level control system. And according to SMS communication theory, we uploaded the obtained actual raw data related to changes in water level to the cloud-based management system. Compared to the traditional mode, our wireless level control mode ensured the real-time communication of system stability, greatly reducing the risks of overflowing and pipe bursting. Our wireless level control system has the advantages of easier maintenance, easier promotion and lower cost. In the future, our project will aim at automation level adjustment, which will be widely applied to various fields related to liquid level control, such as tower and pump control, pond level control, greenhouse irrigation, hydrology monitoring, etc. Through SMS alarm, cloud-based management, etc., we will provide more diversified management programs for more agribusinesses. With respect to the expensive manual control system available in the market, our mode of operation is easy to learn, and greatly reduces economic costs.

We are ready for the three-year operation and maintenance and continuous development and promotion of the project, in order to the increase our simple level control system to the cloud-based level control system.

In terms of social benefits, we used mobile operator's signal resources to ensure easy, stable and reliable work. The herdsmen in Ulanky No.5 Village would not have to travel back and forth along the mountain road at the risk of high and cold. Only by sending messages at home, could they achieve remote level control. The SMS mode replaced manual labor, which saved manpower and facilitated the audiences life. Our wireless level control system was very suitable for the local environment which highly covered communication base station, and was vast in territory, but was not conducive to artificial wiring due to high and cold. We legitimately performed an effective migration of acquired knowledge, and maximized the use of available resources to meet the actual needs of herders, in order to reduce the burden for the government.

In terms of economic benefits, the survey data showed that before the implementation of the project, the annual wage per villager for storing water on duty was RMB 30,000, and the annual maintenance cost was RMB 4,800. So, the maximum annual cost was RMB 34,800. By comparison, the cost of our "Wireless Level Control System" was only RMB 2,000, and the annual equipment repair and maintenance cost was only RMB 800. After the project was implemented, the maximum annual cost was about RMB 2,800. Based on the above project data analysis, we fulfilled entrepreneurship to directly translate knowledge costs into economic benefits, which not only facilitated the audiences life, but also saved the annual economic costs of RMB 32,000.

In this project, we not only brought substantialized solutions to the villagers, but also designed a sustainable win-win business mode for solving similar non-standardized problems.     

Now, we'll introduce our business mode and post-promotion. In a place of Inner Mongolia, it was very inconvenient for the villagers to use water, so they wanted an automated way to facilitate the use of water. Thus, a personalized non-standardized demand arose. They met local component vendors, but the vendors did not have the right products but the components. Then the local vendors that collected the demand cooperated with the Enactus Team to provide solutions for the demand. For the implementation of the demand, after the team assisted in on-site installation and commissioning, the vendor was responsible for maintenance and overhaul work. Thus, a local demand was successfully achieved after linking component vendors, villagers and team. What benefits did the three parties get from the project?

        First, the demand producers got satisfactory solutions.

After cooperating with us, the vendors achieved greater business improvement. They could introduce the automation solutions made by the Enactus Team of Dalian Jiaotong University to more customers, who bought components or electrical equipment. Meanwhile, they assisted the customers in simple engineering design and consulting, thereby expanding business channels, improving traffic, and increasing the market competitiveness of local SMEs.    

Also, our team as students got more on-site engineering experience to combine textbook and practice. Problem finding, solution design, problem solving and feedback consideration helped to improve our scientific literacy, innovative spirit and practical ability.

At the moment, the villagers of Ulanky No.5 Village, who were filled with happy smiles on their face, were enjoying the happiness brought by technology.         

From the laboratory to the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, we used the teams wisdom, the passion changing the world, the eyes finding demands and the actions full of entrepreneurial spirit to do a perfect practice. In the project, we acted as the idea proposer, the information integrator, the difficulty overcomer, the outcome translator and so on, in order to write the historical records for the Enactus Team of Dalian Jiaotong University.

As the initial idea of only three people, the Enactus Team of Dalian Jiaotong University has developed into the present scale of more than 40 members from scratch. So far, we have gradually become mature after three years of growth and honing. The team has been inherited session after session, and the members have been replaced batch after batch, but the only constant is that we always love Enactus and uphold the Enactus spirit and faith of teaching people how to fish.

The help recipient can be a person, a community or even a group. In any case, every weak voice can be brought together into an avalanche of cries; and every little struggle can be united into an earth-shattering momentum.

We come here today not only to show our achievements, but also to boost the morale of all the brother universities and to bang the drum for them. As that song inspired us, we should not fear the stop by million people, but our own surrender.
